The Initiative for Prevention and Early Detection (IPED)

Saving lives through cancer early detection and prevention.

Overview

Advancing Early Detection and Prevention Research

The IPED aims to reduce the cancer burden by detecting cancer early, before it has spread, or by preventing it from occurring.

Our mission is to accelerate research to understand how cancer develops and to identify ways to interrupt the process early on when the chance for cure remains high.

A pan-cancer registry and research platform for patients at high genetic cancer risk

Testing for cancer susceptibility gene mutations is transforming clinical care. Testing identifies individuals at high genetic cancer risk.  However, due to gaps in conventional care delivery models, many at-risk patients are not tested, and those who are often do not receive potentially lifesaving screening and prevention interventions. The high-risk registry and research platform we are building aims to change this paradigm.

Immunologic monitoring and interventions to detect and prevent cancer

The immune system plays a critical role in regulating the growth and progression of cancer.  Like bacteria and viruses, cancer cells are foreign to the body and should induce a host immune response. However, many cancers evade these immune response mechanisms. We aim to study the host-tumor interactions at the earliest stage of cancer development and identify new opportunities for immune-based cancer detection and prevention.

Molecular profiling of pre-malignant and early-stage lesions to identify targets for early detection and prevention

Technological advances make it feasible to unravel the complex composition of small cancers and profile cancers at, or near, the level of a single cell.  These advances are fueling our understanding of cancer development at the earliest stage and contributing to the discovery of biomarkers and targets for the prevention and detection of early cancers.

Address barriers to participating in cancer screening and prevention to ensure equitable access for all.

Disparities in access to cancer screening and prevention services are a significant contributor to the increased cancer mortality observed in minority and historically excluded groups. Socioeconomic, structural, cultural, geographic, and health systems factors all play a role.  Our goal is to develop strategies and programs to address these barriers.
